For general purpose long range target shooting, zero (0) to one thousand (1000) yards, I will stick with the .308 Winchester. It is easy on my barrels, light in recoil, and none of my .308's have muzzle brakes. My neighbors at 600 yard matches don't get upset with me, either (I started shooting "F class" competitions in 2001). - - - For me, the jump to .300 Winchester magnum is not significant enough to warrant consideration. I think it's a fine round, and works well to 1200 or 1300 yards. It's just that when I have an opportunity to go beyond 1000, I can really go out. - - - Thus, my general long range choice is the .300 RUM. For general shooting use, I plan on using the 200 grain Sierra Match King. The 200 smk is plenty, and wind drift at 1000 [compared with the more expensive, harder recoiling, harder-on-my-barrel 240 smk specialty bullet] is negligible between the two. Honestly, I'm nowhere near accurate enough to exploit a 2% wind drift distance at that range, I just hope to call the wind conditions correctly to start with. For those opportunites where I really want to play, I plan on testing the Lost River Ballistics (LRB) copper-nickel alloy solids. Their J40 match bullet is pretty intriguing, and I already have several boxes I plan to load up to test with. Based on the stated BC and load parameters, this load should easily be supersonic at 2000 yards. The only gun I have shot close to that far to date has been my EDM M96, which works well but is more than a "bit" heavy . . .
