Suffice it to say, Mr. George Gardner of G.A. Precision is building me a new 'riffel'. I have decided to try to find something in between my current calibers, .308 Win and .50 BMG. My thoughts on that are listed later in this page. Yes, I know, I don't -need- another rifle, but . . . <grin>
The rifle is loosely based on George's "Rock" (see review and more reviews). Here are the basic specifications I opted for, after chatting with George :
Mike Rock 5R barrel, 28" finished, 1/10" twist, fluted
McMillan A3 stock, forest camo, w/ adjustable cheekpiece, pillar bedded
Badger Ordnance scope rings, one piece scope rail, compensator, SSG style bolt knob, recoil lug, long action steel triggerguard
light green teflon finish (c.f. color pics to get some idea of the color)
Danuser Machine Company Counter-Coil (see my thoughts below on why this is very nice on this rifle)
Premiere Reticles 3.5x10 LR M3 Gen2 Mildot scope
Mike Miller / Tactical Intervention sling

My conclusions based on the above
I settled on Hodgdon's H-1000 powder, but will also try out Retumbo at some point. The H-1000 is my preliminary choice, based on a number of inputs I've received. Sierra lists a max load of it as both their "accuracy" and their "hunting" load, for 200 gr. bullets (8 lbs. of H-1000 sitting on bench, will get me a bit less than 600 rounds)
The Counter Coil has been a real boon to my shooting in the past. Since I don't get time to shoot each week I'll often take a whole day, or 4, when I can. So I prefer the compensator (on .300 and up) and the counter coil (on most any bolt gun, .308 and up), since I may shoot 100 to 500 rounds while away from work. It makes my 1000 yard .308 target load (Varget/175smk @ 2724 fps) in my stock PSS feel like a .223, no kidding! My .308 PSS has no compensator and does shoot fine at 1000 yds. I've also had good luck with a "Comp-Coil" on my Benelli M1, will put on the M3 later as well. One word of caution; on this recoil operated shotgun you must use the comp coil, not the counter coil. The counter coil is so effective (through it's hydraulic piston) at reducing recoil that it prevents cycling even with most full power loads.
Well, have got my rifle in now, thanks to George for putting up with me. I do ask questions, and George answered them all (including the stupid ones). I can also attest that he is a perfectionist, which I see as a benefit.
The CounterCoil did not fit into the A3 stock due to the design of the cheek piece, and how it fits inside the buttstock. There was simply no room to inlet the stock for the hydraulic piston. But between the Badger muzzle brake and the thick pad, it is quite tolerable.
Updated : some pictures of the rifle [warning - pix are appx 300 to 600 k each] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
The rifle w/ the green metal work is the .300; the rifle with the black metal work and the Mike Miller sling [mine was in the safe, doh!] is a friend's Rock in .308
I've only had time for one range outing so far, worked loads up to 89.7 grains of H-1000 w/ the 200 smk,
and they ran into appx. 3.5" at 600 yards. I have not had a chance to Chrono this load yet, but I suspect it is over 3000 fps.
Got the chronograph out : yep, about 3k fps. Worked up from 90 in one grain increments, to 94.0 - my
endpoint. 95.0 started showing signs of overpressure in my rifle, and case head expansion was .0002", while 94.0 showed
no expansion. Final velocity at 94.0 in my rifle was 3289 fps avg. You'll have to work up any loads in your own gun, for
safety's sake.
Shooting - many range sessions have now shown the Badger muzzle brake does not kick up anything at the firing point,
using my 9" bipod from the prone. This is a good thing. Of course, you can "toss the salad" to the sides
still, so this must be planned for. Tested the rifle out to 1000 yards down at Badlands in June, shot like a dream. I could almost
